One Small Step at a Time – The Project to Reduce the Use of Plastic Bags in Strahan

Located on the edge of Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area, Strahan residents and businesses are acutely aware of our environmental responsibilities. Since its creation in 2008 the Strahan Sustainable Tourism Committee has undertaken several projects to encourage environmentally responsible behaviour.
Friday 5th March will see the official launch of our most ambitious project yet – the campaign to make Strahan plastic-bag free. Rather than banning the bags, however, we have instead established a project to encourage the use of alternatives, and, in collaboration with Strahan Primary School, have created a unique logo which has been printed on calico bags. Chairman of the Strahan Sustainable Tourism Committee, Mark McDermott, is delighted with the response: “Our first print run of 5,000 has been distributed to businesses throughout the town and we will need to re-order very soon. Visitors love the logo with its lighthouse, boat and azure kingfisher, and are very supportive of our campaign to reduce plastic bags at the checkout counter.’
Launched by Braddon MHA Jeremy Rockliffe, we will also be joined by Australia’s Local Hero 2005, Ben Kearney. As a former Strahan resident and inspiration for the Coles Bay Plastic Bag Free Town campaign, Ben was the obvious choice to join us in this campaign.
