Hobart to Strahan - one of Australia's top ten drives

Voted one of Australia's top ten drives and featured in the Australian Traveller, this is a really good reason for you to hop in your car or hire a great sporty job from any of the hire companies and do the drive. You can drive the drive in one leg just for the sheer driving pleasure or take your time and stop off at Hamilton, Tarraleah or Derwent Bridge and Lake St Clair. Some great accommodation to suit all tastes from luxury to backpackers.

Pick up the Travelways paper or call into the Travel Centre at Davey Street in Hobart or any of the TVINs around the State. Call any of them for great advice and you can book with them or direct with any of the operators in Strahan. At the moment there are some great offers and plenty of reasons to travel to Strahan. So if you are on the mainland at the moment there has never been a better time to come on over!! Historical Notes on Strahan & Macquarie Harbour

Strahan started life as a tent store to supply the explorers and timbercutters who looked to the West Coast for the Huon Pine and for the possibility of a gold strike that would bring back the skilled labour which had abandoned Tasmania for the Victorian Goldfields in the 1850's.

As the only workable port on the West Coast, Strahan boomed with the growth of the Mt Lyell copper mines in the 1890's -
